Occupying
the eastern two-thirds of Hispaniola, the Dominican Republic has much to
offer in the way of natural beauty, old colonial architecture, attractive
beaches and
modern resorts. In addition, the country is steeped in history as it is here
where European settlement of the Western Hemisphere really began. Santo
Domingo, the capital, is the oldest continuously inhabited city in this half
of the globe, and history buffs will delight in the many sites that boast of
antiquity in the city’s 16th century Colonial Zone. Founded in 1496 by
Christopher Columbus’ brother Bartholomew and Nicolas de Ovando, by the
first half of the 16th century Santo Domingo became the bustling hub of
Spanish commerce and culture in the New World.
To the east of Santo Domingo is La Romana, home of the 7,000 acre Casa de
Campo resort, where many of the rich and famous like to get away from it

or engaging in a round of golf on one of the Caribbean’s finest courses.
Also part of the complex is Altos de Chavon, a re-creation of a medieval
Spanish village situated on a bluff overlooking the Rio Chavon. Its cobble
stone streets are enhanced by lanterns and wrought-iron balconies, while
courtyards are swathed with bougainvillea. In the village live a number of
artists plying their trade, and there are handicraft shops and chic
boutiques selling exquisite jewelry and fashions by such noted designers as
Oscar de la Renta. |
